Hugo the Lamb: Free Amigurumi Pattern
September 9th, 2017 | 2 Comments | by Nea
Hey guys!
He’s all done, my first free amigurumi pattern, Hugo the Lamb! I actually designed him last summer (2016) but I think I’ve made around six different versions of him to get the pattern just right. I am very happy with how he finally turned out and would like to share the pattern with you today!
You might notice that Hugo resembles my blog logo, which is not a coincidence. Being the first amigurumi that I’ve created completely on my own, from idea to finished product and pattern, he inspired me to start a blog in the first place.
I’ve decided that Hugo the Lamb is an intermediate pattern, because of the joining of legs and use of bobble stitches. However, this pattern does not need you to sew on any pieces, arms and ears are crocheted on as you go along. This makes it kind of important to make the things in the right order, so ears and arms first. Good luck!
About the pattern
You can buy a bundle of two beautifully formatted PDF versions of this pattern on Etsy. One version uses color, while the other is made in black and white to be more printer friendly.
Here’s the link to the Hugo the Lamb Ravelry page, if you would like to start a project there.
Disclaimer: This pattern is an original pattern by Nea Creates, it may not be redistributed in any way, shape or form. Finished size: when finished, Hugo measures approximately 19cm tall, 13cm across the widest part of the body, 22cm (plain)/23 cm (fluffy) between the ears and 9cm thick.
Difficulty: intermediate
Notes: This pattern uses US crochet terms and SI units throughout. I use a smaller hook size than what the yarn calls for to get tighter stitches. Ears, arms, legs and the beginning of the body are worked in continuous rounds, the rest of the body is worked in closed rounds.

N! Cut the yarn, yo and pull completely through the loop on the hook, pull on the yarn tail to create a knot. Thread the yarn tail and pull it through the opening of the ear to the outside of the ear, push it back in the same hole but between the layers and pull it out somewhere else (P4–P6). Pull on the yarn tail and cut it. (5)

Body, first in Gray, then White
N! After both legs are finished, line them up beside each other with their yarn tails facing you.
R1 make a slipknot and put it on the hook, insert the hook from the inside of the right leg to the inside of the left leg through one st on each leg, make a sc (P7–P9), 29 sc around the left leg, insert the hook from the inside of the left leg to the inside of the right leg through the same sts that you made the first sc in, make a sc, 29 sc around the right leg (60)
R2-3 60 sc (60)
R4 cc (to white), sl st, 58 sc (60)
R5 60 sc (60)
R5.5 sc, sl st (60)
N! From this point we will be working in closed rounds. Because bobble stitches build on the wrong side, the rows with bobble stitches will be worked from the inside of the body instead of the outside.
R6 ch 1, tyw (working from the inside), skip the sl st, [bs, sc]×29, bs, sc in the same st as the sl st of the previous row was made in, sl st to ch 1 (60)
R7 ch 1, tyw (working from the outside), 60 sc, sl st to ch 1 (60)

R13 With arms: 17 sc, [sc through two sts of an arm and the next st]×5 (P11), 16 sc, [sc through two sts of an arm and the next st]×5, 17 sc, sl st to ch 1 (P12) (60)
Without arms: repeat row 7 (60)
R14 repeat row 8 (60)
N! With rosy cheeks: cut two pieces of pink yarn, approximately 60cm long, to use for each cheek. For R15 crochet with the pink yarn around the white yarn to carry the white yarn over each cheek.
R15 With rosy cheeks: 21 sc, cc (to pink), sc, cc (to white), 11 sc, cc (to pink), sc, cc (to white), 22 sc, sl st to ch 1 (P13) (60)
Without rosy cheeks: repeat row 7 (60)
N! With rosy cheeks: for R16 pull the white yarn in on the inside of the body before switching to the pink yarn. Do not crochet around the white yarn. Pull the pink yarn tail in on the inside of the body and on top of the white yarn when switching back so that the pink yarn is caught on the inside of the body by the first yo in white.
R16 With rosy cheeks: ch 1, tyw, [bs, sc]×10, bs, cc (to pink), bs, cc (to white), [bs, sc]×5, bs, cc (to pink), bs, cc (to white), [bs, sc]×11, sl st to ch 1 (60)

N! Do the final stuffing of the body.
R33 ch 1, tyw, 6 dec, sl st to ch 1 (8)
N! Make sure that you have stuffed the body properly, then cut the yarn and thread it on a yarn needle, weave the yarn tail through the front loops only of the remaining sts (8), pull to close (P18). Make a knot or two with the tail then bury it inside of the toy.
All done!

Hello Nea,
I am making Hugo the Lamb at the moment with your beautiful pattern!
Thank you for offering this for free 🙂 I crochet a lot and it is a really well explained pattern and nice to follow! I love it!!!
One issue I have tho and wanted to check if other’s already brought that up.
When I follow your placement for eyes & arms (not at the ears yet…) I get them in a funny position on the side of the toy… Do you think this could have to do with Body row 5.5 where you add 5 extra SC moving the row end off centre? Or did I do something wrong?
Thank you & I hope you have a great day!
Hi Ania! Sorry for the suuuperlate reply. ☹️
I’m so glad you enjoy the pattern, it means a lot to hear that you think it’s well explained and easy to follow. 🙏😊
Maybe you’ve already figured it out since I was so late to reply, but the issue is probably that row 5.5 only adds 1 sc and 1 sl st (not 5 sc), and this is to move the end of the row to the center back of the body. 😊
